Massive algae growth effectively restricts and inhibits the growth of higher plants, leading to their death over time. For this reason, algae control, although difficult, is necessary. The mass appearance of green algae is favoured by increased water hardness and high concentrations of nitrogen compounds.

Control of algae requires a comprehensive action, consisting of the following elements: improvement of the living conditions of the plants (lighting, fertilisation, proper selection of plants), control of the chemical parameters of the water and their improvement if necessary, regular water changes and desludging of the substrate, periodic cleaning of the filters, control of the stocking of the tank and rational feeding of the fish.
