Calcium is a fundamental building block of bones and teeth, ensuring proper skeletal mineralization and bone density during growth [1,2,3]. It is essential for the production and activation of numerous enzymes and hormones that regulate digestion, fat metabolism, and energy metabolism [4,5,6]. Adequate calcium intake is essential for maintaining proper blood clotting, as calcium influences wound healing processes. Calcium interacts with other macronutrients during muscle contractions, including the heart muscle, promoting optimal muscle tone. Calcium is also essential for the proper functioning of the nervous system. Calcium deficiencies or excessively low blood calcium levels cause nerve cells to become hypersensitive. Tetany (painful muscle spasms) can occur, and is particularly dangerous for pregnant and perinatal bitches. Calcium also supports the release of neurotransmitters in the nervous system [7,8].
